With the onset of September synchronizing with Mercury direct and a New Moon in mutable Virgo, we are in definite transitional territory that can feel a bit liminal and uncertain. If you're in the northern hemisphere, there is that natural onset of the seasonal shift that might amplify all of this.

Yet, this New Moon points to more than a mere season change, especially as it serves as our onramp into the final eclipse season of 2024. More broadly speaking, the encroaching Saturn-Neptune alignment also touches on some major global shifts, and with the t-square alignments of the past weeks, the astrology is a little edgy.

Virgo is often caricatured as the archetype of the perfectionist, and this does emerge in relation to it. Yet, pursuing perfection is always mixed up with heavy idealism and a focus on the transcendental. Paradoxically, as an earth sign, Virgo is also highly pragmatic, and therefore seeks to ground the transcendent in the everday world.

Such can be our focus and struggle to pass through this New Moon, an attempt to integrate and implement the ideal into the real, or noticing the sharp and heavy contrast between what "should be" and what is. From there, we can make improvements that will get us further toward our goals, however big or small.

This Virgo New Moon can reflect an amplification of imperfections and where we've somehow fallen short, so be on watch for excessive criticalness, either from yourself or others. Also, another major challenge here, reflected in Jupiter's square from Gemini, can be maintaining our focus altogether or having to compromise and work between competing objectives and points of view.

Overall, a Virgo New Moon, especially one touched by Saturn and Jupiter can be a time to "get it together," prioritize and sharpen our focus for the remainder of the year. Criticalness can also be helpful in editing and throwing out excess clutter, such as diminishing habits or commitments that no longer serve our highest interests.

This month's New Moon in tropical Virgo occurs alongside Mercury's direct station and the end of Mercury's retrograde cycle. However, Mercury stations often correlate with the amplification of Mercurial themes such as the inundation of information flow, communications, and high stimulation, all of which could lead to overlooking critical details or technological glitches with so much going on.

Yet, the Virgo archetype, expounded via its ruler Mercury in its home sign Virgo, emphasizes those more essential points. Still, it might be wise to be more redundant and critical under this lunation to avoid any revisions later on. After several weeks of revision, we are beginning to regain our regular momentum under this lunation. We are now planting the seeds of greater efficiency, competence, and high-level service, so don't feel the need to avoid what needs to get done.

In fact, aside from Neptune's opposition to this New Moon, there is a positive flow of Earth sign energy via a grand trine between the Sun, Moon, Uranus, and Pluto. Neptune's opposition can signify the challenge of pragmatically integrating our ideals and visions in the real world, and it can be a potent conduit for bringing loftier aspirations more firmly into our grasp.

This is a powerful lunation moment where new outlets for greater service, competence enhancement, and self-improvement may emerge. The challenge is not getting too stuck on the ideals, and knowing when good enough is better than striving for perfection. Additionally, maintain a realistic grasp of what you can or can't take on. The urge to escape and deny looming deadlines is also possible with Neptune. However, so, too, is a healthier balance between hard work and downtime, and beginning new attempts with that can go a long way here.

A Fresh Route: Mars in Aquarius+Venus in Scorpio

We are still in the dark of the Moon, the cyclic restart of the lunar cycle. New beginnings abound pointing us in fresh directions. The Moon's new cycle is underway at the start of the week, so be prepared to rise and forge ahead. Mars re-enters Aquarius today, following Venus' entrance into Scorpio yesterday. Mars direct in Aquarius will make its third and final square with Uranus next week (Sept. 18), but we will feel it the next two weeks.

Mars in Aquarius square Uranus is innovative and cutting edge in its approach, but also volatile, even erratic. The rebel genius is the Aquarian/Uranian ideal, and Mars' square can inspire sudden breaks with the past and anything suffocating autonomy. So, the next two weeks offers up another wave of rebellion, freedom fighting, and groundbreaking moves. However, unlike Mars/Uranus squares earlier this year, Venus joins the conversation.

Yes, Venus will turn retrograde next month. We may already notice strange turnarounds in our relationships, serendipitous meetups, or even blast from the past reemergences. Those will get louder Oct. through Nov., and Uranus flavors each of these changing dynamics in our partnerships. Anticipate allowing yourself and others more space to reinvent themselves.

Experimentation with new arrangements and interactions is a likely scenario. However, Venus in Scorpio gets deep into the core of relational issues, uncovering all hidden dimensions. Be sensitive to that, and avoid pushing others too hard too fast. Venus retrograde is a cycle of revaluing what we love and want, so give your heart some time to reflect. Some profound work lies ahead.
